Zappos is an online fashion seller (shoes, handbags, eyewear, accessories, clothing), directed by Tony Hsieh. It was acquired by Amazon in 2009.
WHAT IS THIS HR INNOVATION ABOUT?
The CEO invested in the development of a computer software, which goal was to reinforce proximity between the employees and teams.
When the employee logs in his/her computer every morning, a picture of a co-worker appears. The employee must guess his name between three propositions. Once the choice made, and even if it is right or wrong, a short introduction of the co-worker appears.
WHY WAS THIS INNOVATION IMPLEMENTED?
The company grew up so fast that people felt they did not know anyone anymore. It had became “depersonalized”. The CEO was worried about conviviality and proximity between the teams.
WHAT ARE ITS MAIN BENEFITS?
According to Tony Hsieh, one of the best predictors of the commitment of an employee is the number of friends he/she has to work. This reveals the importance of corporate culture and employee happiness. This unique technique allowed reinforcing bonds in a context of strong development and remote workforce.
